Is it finished yet?

10 02 2013

When is a creation finished?

If you’re creatively inclined, you probably know this feeling: You add one, tiny stroke of the pen or brush, one last stitch of thread, one last knit of the needle, one final tap of the chistle, that last elusive line of a song, the final chord or note, the last word of a poem or story…

…and it’s done.

But if you’re creatively inclined, you probably also know this feeling: Not quite

You’ll go back to it later. Minutes, hours, days or weeks later. But your creation refuses to be finished.

Or this feeling: You revisit your finished masterpiece, and think, ‘Hmmmmmm…’ and reach for your pen, or your needle, your chistle or your guitar…

Why is it some things are definitely, absolutely and totally finished, and others… well, they just never quite seem to get there. Or they do for a bit, but then seem to morph back into an ‘almost but not quite‘ finished state?

And what of this world we’re living in? At what stage of finished is that?

Interesting…
